Location research

.

Blog post written by me but research by all

For my groups location, we started off planning to film half the sequence in a bedroom and the other half outside in the woods. This idea got quickly shut down by Adam and Tom as they said the weather was unreliable at this time of the year. We then as a group decided we would be better off filming in one room for the whole sequence. We decided we are going to rearrange the room to be more convenient and film the fort and exorcism at different times. First we will build the fort and film all the footage for the fort shots and then set up the room for the exorcism and shoot all the footage for that.

My group and I discussed possible locations for this and decided we would consider Caitlin room at home and the single rooms at Beatrice Webb house. We knew filming at Beatrice Webb could be more convenient as its only a 5 minute drive compared to Caitlin room which is a 35 minute drive away, meaning we would lose a hour and 10 mins from day of filming.

After we spoke about our possible locations, I went back to Beatrice Webb and Caitlin went back to her house and we sent in the images of possible rooms we would use.

Here are the options

BEATRICE WEBB HOUSE- These are the two rooms we are considering in Beatrice Webb.

CAITLIN ROOM- This is Caitlin room at her house.

In todays lesson my group and I decided to go with a Beatrice Webb house room. The reason we did this is because even though Caitlin room is more homey, we though it was too much of a waste of time to go all the way there and then remove all of the objects surrounding her bed. The Beatrice Webb room is easier to get to and is already plain, which gives us the opportunity to do whatever we need to the room.

Here is confirmation that we got permission to film in Beatrice Webb house

Group Meeting from 26th, 27th and 28th of Jan

Over the past three lesson, my group and I developed our opening title sequence into a shot by shot. We broke down the action so that it could meet 2 minutes for final product. We included lots of different camera techniques to keep the sequence interesting and have audience involvement (immersed). We tweaked the shots and finalised the actions would be shown in each shot. We took our time to think about the emotional connection between the two main characters because we want to make the story line more believe and want the audience to sense the love between the two. We ensured the beginning started a slower past and gradually built up to a climax that then suddenly came to a halt, which leaves the audience wanting more.

Camera workshop 2

On the 21st of January my media class took part in our second camera workshop

In this workshop we were told to film a simple scene and then were put into random groups. My group and I filmed a scene of Izzy tying her shoe lace up. We started with a wide shot of Izzy tying her lace up. We then moved onto a close up and placed the camera on the floor so it can be on the same level as the shoe. Izzy then tied her shoe lace up again. We then did a mid shot from the Izzy side as she retied the shoe lace. In another session we are going to be editing this scene and joining the shots together to create a smooth scene.

The rule of thirds is a guideline that places the subject in the left or right third of an image. The rule of thirds divides the shot into nine equal parts which is split by two equally spaced horizontal and vertical lines resulting in control points. The rule of thirds makes the shot more pleasing to the eye.

Continuity is the importance of flow between clips. An example of this could be a mid shot of a character going to pick up a water bottle and then the next shot a close up of the SAME hand picking up the water bottle. It is extremely important to make sure the same hand picks up the water bottle as if not the clip could look tacky and unprofessional. Continuity also helps the audience follow the action that is going on in the shot.

The main calls that are used on set to ensure the set runs smoothly are "stand by","roll camera", "action" and "cut". Following these call outs while on set are vital as it saves time and helps prevent mistakes. "stand by" is to let everyone know filming is about to start, "roll camera" is the starting of the camera, "action" means the start of acting out the scene and "cut" means stop rolling cameras.

The 180 rule used to stop a character\object jumping around in different places during a scene. The rule is to pretend there is a imaginary line between two characters or objects and the aim is to not cross that line when filming.

Group Meeting 25th of Jan

Today my group and I spoke to Tom, who is helping us with the practicality of our opening sequence. We told him about our idea and then he gave his honest feedback. Tom told us that the idea of filming in the woods was unrealistic as the weather is unreliable. We decided to change the wood setting to a den they made in their room with blankets, pillows and fairy lights. We would make the den in a studio or in the same room as the exorcism. The aim would be to show the contrast of how the mood can change in the same room. We decided that at this point in the the girls relationship their feelings are getting stronger and they are realising how much they like each other. As the shots progress their feelings get more and more strong. We want this to represent forbidden lesbian relationships in the 1980s-1990s. Our whole piece is focused on contrasting moods, emotions and atmospheres. We found research that we based the exorcism one. The article was about a girl who's parents got the church to perform a exorcise to get the "demon lesbianism" out of her. Here's the article.

Group Meeting 24th of Jan

In todays lesson my group and I came to the decision that we are going to use Caitlin opening sequence idea about the two lesbian girls and the exorcism. We discussed her idea over again and read through her shot by shot. We all gave opinions on what we should add and what we don't like. We all took into consideration each others ideas on what we should add/change. We are all happy with the way our opening sequence is heading.

Here is the story board we made in class. This shows the shots we are planning on creating for our opening sequence.

Camera workshop 1

The camera we will be using is called a Black Magic Smth.

The "yours" & "mine" rule is a technique that ensures that all heavy equipment doesn't fall and helps with communication in the group.

The spirit level is for ensuring the camera is straight and in the middle of the tripod.

The way to set up a tripod correctly is by unfolding the tripod out of the bag. Once the tripod is out of the bag carefully open the legs and place it on the ground. Then unlock all the bottom levers and lift it up by pulling the top of the tripod to adjust the height. When happy with the height re lock the levers again. Once happy with the height of the tripod, set up the camera.

To carefully set up the camera on the top of the camera you must take the camera out of the box ensuring you carry it close to your body. Then push the button on the platform of the tripod while slowly sliding the camera onto the tripod, releasing the button when the camera securely in place. Once this is done adjust the levers on either side of the pan and move till the camera is in the your wanted position.

To get a successful focus and zoom, you must first zoom in as far as possible on the main target in the shot and then focus the image while slowly zoom out to the desired shot size. It is very important to do this for every shot because otherwise the camera will lose focus on the different subjects within the shot and won't produce such a clean crisp image.

White balancing is changing the colour of an image to make it look more normal and realist to the human eye. Lets say a scene starts off inside a room but then works it way to outside, the image will appear a blue colour so it needs white balancing to look normal. This always works the other way around, for example filming outside and then going indoors can make the image overly orange. To change this there is a symbol on the screen that has symbols for the environment you are filming in. This symbol includes being outside, inside, in the shade, under fluorescent lights, under cloud and a custom options.

Exposure is how much light is let into the lens and how bright the image turns out. A low exposure lets in less light meaning a darker image and a high exposure lets in more light meaning a lighter and even an over exposure image. There is a blue slider by the camera lens which allows you to change the exposure. When filming in a dark area you will want a higher exposure to allow more light in and when filming in a bright area you will want a lower exposure to make sure you don't allow too much light in. It is important to change the exposure to ensure you get the perfect amount of light in a it will benefit the image by making it look natural and clear.

Group step by step

 My idea

Shot-by-shot narrative action list for opening sequence idea 2

. Establishing mid shot of a brick wall with posters on it, hold shot for 5 seconds.
. Camera zooms closer to one pacific poster.
. Camera holds shot for 5 seconds of that one poster, poster says missing girl with picture and information of girl.
. Hand grabs poster and crushes it up, camera zooms out to mid shot of wall and the hand throws the paper in the bin next to the wall.
. Camera cuts to a tracking shot of women talking down graveyard, music begins low and sad tune.
. Mid shot of women joining a group of others at a funeral in the graveyard.
. close up of guests at funeral looking sad.
. Another mid shot and close ups.
. Wide shot of guests walking away from the funeral in different directions.
. Camera follows the girl from before as she walks off alone down a path in graveyard.
. Camera facing the girl tracking her as she walks.
. Camera cuts to behind the girl, still following her as she walks but now she from behind.
. A diegetic ping sound is heard and the girls phone brightly lights up in her hand.
. Girl and camera come to a hold and stop moving (Camera still behind the girl).
. Girl moves her hand with the phone in it higher up nearer her face.
. Camera zooms into the phone.
. Music automatically changes to a creepy sound.
. A message notification is on the bright iPhone scene.
. Camera cuts to a mid of the phone screen, and the name of the "dead" friend appears with the message saying "I know what you did".
.Opening sequence ends and screen goes black

Caitlin idea

Girl 1 - extreme religous parents

Girl 2 - extreme conservative parents

  1. Establishing wide shot of two girls backs to the camera in the centre of the screen with a shed or hut of some sort in front of them. No music just a few seconds of silence maybe a few birds chirping.
  2. Zoom in on their hands and focus on their fingers touching for a few seconds - music starts to play - possibly a nirvana song or under the milky way by the church.
  3. Cut to close up of girl 1 face red and tear streaked then see her head turn towards the door
  4. Cross cut to the same girls eyes in the exact same composition but in the woods now and she smiles then pan down to her lips and smile then zoom out slightly so we see both girls looking at each other smiling.
  5. Cross cut back to girl 1 room and in doorway we see three figures back lit to look ominous - her parents and a priest.
  6. POV shot of them walking towards her
  7. Quick cut back to them in the woods laughing
  8. Eyeline match from previous shot? from parents POV and we see her backing into her bed
  9. Close up (back in woods) of hand brushing hair behind ears and girl 2 close up of eyes
  10. When she blinks cut to mid shot? of her parents hands grabbing her wrists to restrain her
  11. Cross cut to them holding hands and one girls tracing circles on the back of the other girls hand
  12. Cross cut to mid shot (priests pov) of parent giving a nod to the priest
  13. Eyeline match to see priest nod back
  14. Close up of him preparing the holy water
  15. Cut to close up of girl 2 crying
  16. Wide shot to show her struggling
  17. Then birds eye view mid shot to see her struggle but then give up because it is useless
  18. Close up of priest picking up a large cross
  19. Wide shot with priests back to us on the left side so we can see the face of girl 2 he lifts the cross over her body
  20. Close up of priests lips moving slowly in small mumbled prayer
  21. Then zoom out to close up of his face and follow as he turns his head up and shouts prayers at the top of his lungs and this effort is visible despite the sound being muted.
  22. Another close up of her sobbing but her body doesn't move like a typical exorcism because there isn't actually any evil in her and the parents are just being deluded

  23. Close up of mothers face looking away and a tear streaking down her face
  24. Close up of fathers face staring at her looking stern
  25. Birds eye view of priest shaking her shoulders
  26. Then mid shot from the side to see priest shouting in her face as she tries to look away
  27. Sudden cut to her face looking numbly at the ceiling red and puffy from crying then slowly zoom out into a birds eye to see her lying spread out on her bed alone in a dark room we hear a sigh that fades over the top of the soundtrack
  28. Then very fast editing of loads of different shots of them that were taking in the forest and part of the exorcism all going very fast sort of like a flip book
  29. Sudden stop and cut to close up of their faces in the woods we see both of their faces in the shot looking at each other and one of them says i love you in a breathy voice and the music stops before this shot so it is silent with just the breathy i love you and then a moment where they still look at each other and then the screen goes to black and the title appears

Otto idea

  • The first shot is a close up shot of the hands of our main character. Sitting atop a hill/grassy area. The hands would be in wrappings and would appear to have blood on them. They would figet with their hands and slowly unwrap them.
  • Then cut to their face, their face would be sweating and they would be visibly exhausted.
  • Cut back to their hands, now unwrapped, we see the dried up blood.
  • A zoomed out shot of the them where we see their whole body, they fidget with their hands and caress their scars. They sigh and get up.
  • A follow shot of them walking inside a house, in a normal pace.
  • Another follow shot, with zoom following them towards the gym. Keep the focus on them as they walk, their parents are in the blurred out background appear to be trying to speak to him but their voices are drowned out.
  • A close up of their face, looking down as they enter the gym.
  • Zoom out as they shut the door behind them.
  • A still shot of them standing in front of the door and looking at a punching bag.
  • Close up shot of their shoes as they drop their gym bag.
  • High angle shot from the position of the gym bag as they get nearer to the punching bag.
  • Close up shot of the punching bag as they hit it.
  • Title.

Beas idea

  • Wide shot of person sat in centre of frame in jacket (establishing)
  • Close up of light flickering
  • Wide shot of person sat
  • Close up of jacket
  • Zooms out to a wide shot
  • Mid shot from the left (fast paced)
  • Mid shot from above (fast paced)
  • Mid shot from right (fast paced)
  • Mid shot from below (fast paced)
  • Camera pans up to a wide shot (doctor enters)
  • Close up on patient for a reaction
  • Close up on doctors’ jacket with a badge stating ‘mental asylum’
  • Close up of doctors notes, scribbled ‘hopeless’
  • Wide shot, see patient not looking at doctor
  • Zooms in to patient, to close up
  • Cuts between patient face, lights and their feet twitching
  • Close up of patients eye, opens very wide

End.

Group meeting 20th of Jan

Today my group and I went through our individual shot-by-shot ideas. We all said our honest opinions on what we like and don't like about each others shot-by-shot ideas. We are all staying open minded and happily taking criticism until we make a final decision.

Adam came around and heard our step-by-step ideas. He gave us feed back on how successful each idea could turn out and how we could achieve each idea.

Opening sequence idea 3

 Opening sequence idea 3

Action - middle eastern spy action movie.

In this movie, the main character would be a spy working for the Mossad. The film will follow the character completing a mission in the middle east.

The opening sequence would start off with the main character who is an agent from the Mossad. The agent would be following his victim around a museum in the UK without him knowing. The reason he is following him is because the spy is aware that his victim is about to complete a terrorist attack.

Opening Sequence idea 2

 Opening Sequence idea 2

The genre for this opening sequence idea would be horror.

The plot of the movie is about a girl who goes missing and two years later is presumes dead but isn't.

The opening sequence would start with a mid shot of a brick wall. The brick wall would be covered in many posters about jobs, missing dogs etc, however one poster would be standing out more than others. This poster would say missing girl. The camera then zooms slowly in closer to the poster. A hand then grabs the poster off the wall and the camera follows the hand as it throws the poster away. There would be no music during these few shots but instead a diegetic sound of rain and wind. The camera then cuts to a 20 year old girl walking down a graveyard. The camera follows the girl as she joins a bigger group at the graveyard. The group are all at a funeral for the girl who went missing and was presumed dead. The music is a sad low beat sound and the camera focuses on the funeral for a few shots. The camera moves to close ups of the family and friends crying however the main focus is on the 20year old who is also crying. As the funeral comes to a end the camera moves to a wide angle shot of the family and friends leaving the funeral. The camera then cuts to the girl walking down a path in the graveyard alone. The girl is still crying and looks extremely sad. The camera then moves behind her and follows her from behind for a few steps. A ping diegetic sound is heard and the girls phone lights up. The camera then zooms in closer to the phone and focuses on a message that has just been sent. The message is from her "dead" best friends phone number and the message says "I know what you did". The music then automatically chances from a sad and low beat sound to creepy one. The opening titles then ends.

Opening sequence idea 1

 Opening sequence idea one

For my first opening sequence idea, I want the genre to be a coming of age movie. The plot would be following a girl through her teenage years at a college in the uk in the 80s.

The opening sequence would be following her morning routine until she gets to School.
The opening sequence would start off with a diegetic sound of the girls alarm going off. The camera would be a mid shot of her girl lying in her bed. The next few shots would be of the girl getting ready for school in her 80s room. For example her doing her make up and getting dressed. There would be non diegetic of music playing in the back ground. The music would be an upbeat fun 80s song, something like "don't go breaking my heart" by Elton John. The next shot after the girl getting ready would be a wide angle shot of her house which is a small cottage in the country side. The next shot would be of her walking out of her front door. The camera would then follow her to school. She may be walking or riding a bike down the country lanes to get to School. Once she arrives at School the opening sequence would end with the diegetic sound of the school bell.
For this opening sequence I think the set design and costumes will be what makes it. The year would need to be established by what the girl is wearing and the objects she uses, eg like no iPhones.

Kyle Cooper

 Kyle Cooper

Kyle Cooper is an American designer, best known for creating title sequences for motion pictures. Cooper has directed and produced more than 150 film titles and VFX sequences as well as creating logos and advertising Games and Adverts. He has been nominated for five Emmy Awards nominations and successfully won two, along side a MFA and BFA.
Kyle Copper was born on the 13 of July 1962 in Salem, Massachusetts, maybe this is why he works on such glory and dark films !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0k8koLuGnXw&t=181s - Demo Reel of Kyle Coppers work

The Demo Reel of Kyle Coppers work is extremely interesting as it shows an overall view of his work. From this video I picked up on how all the words used are never still. The words or sentences are always moving, growing or shrinking and disappearing off the screen in a unique way. For example a TNT logo
disappears off the screen by disintegrating and the small particles floating away across the screen. Another common thing I noticed was the way the screen is always busy with many thing happening, unless words are being shown in which case the screen may be empty. He uses solid colours as well as
overlapping and fading his images. I think Kyle Copper work is hugely engaging to a audience.
