Final editing session

For the final editing session, we were happy and felt on top on our work as we were finished. However we then faced a big issue, the song we were using was copyright. My group and I spoke to Adam and Tom to discuss what will happen if we use the original song and what the benefits of changing the song to a none copy right is. Tom and Adam then left my group and I alone to decide what we wanted to do. We argued and spoke about it for a good 15 mins, as we all had different options and input. We decide to have a look for other music that could work. After searching for a few days and not finding anything, we decided to risk it and stick to our original song. This was a risky decision as it may very well be taken down from the Hurtwood YouTube. However we wanted to be graded off the best work we could achieve and we felt that the song made our work much better.

The final song we are using.

We are now finally done with editing our opening sequence. My group and I are all extremely happy with the final product of our opening sequence :))))))

Editing session 2,3,4 and 5

Over the last couple of days my group and I have been editing our opening title sequence. After our first editing session, we understood what we needed to do and got a better understanding of how to edit on adobe photoshop.

On our second editing session, we showed Tom what we started in session 1. Toms feedback was positive however he said that we were reaching the climax of the sequence too quickly and that we should add more close ups to the beginning before carrying on. We went back and added more shots at the beginning, which did indeed make our opening sequence look much better. Once we were happy with the first half of the sequence, we attempted to finish it. There were certain shots we wanted to use but we thought the acting wasn't strong enough, which made it harder to edited. A conclusion we came to when editing was that it would be best to not include the vicars face as much as possible. The reason for this was that we thought the acting was too weak and fake which made the opening sequence look comical and took away the atmosphere we wanted to create.

After 4 sessions we were done we editing our opening sequence. At this point all we had to do was add a soundtrack and tittles. We downloaded the music and added it to the sequence. As a group we were very happy with the music and thought it matched the sequence unbelievably.

We then went on to make titles. This is the order we followed when creating our titles: Production company (distributer), Production company (producer), Filmmaker, Film title, Lead cast, Supporting cast, Casting director, Music composer, Associate producers, Editors, Production designer, Director of Photography, Executive producer, Production designer, Director of Photography, Executive producer, Producer, Writers and Director.

We had to use fake names and fake production company when creating titles. I decided to make the fake names, which was fun. Once we added the titles, We were basically finished with still one editing session left to add the final touches.

Research into order of titles

 Order of titles research

The standard order for opening titles are: Production company (distributer), Production company (producer), Filmmaker, Film title, Lead cast, Supporting cast, Casting director, Music composer, Associate producers, Editors, Production designer, Director of Photography, Executive producer, Production designer, Director of Photography, Executive producer, Producer, Writers and Director.

My group and I plan on following this order in our opening title sequence. The reason we are keeping ours in the basic order is so its clearer and as our genre is Romantic Triller, we didn't feel the need to make our titles over the top.

The Film Fear 1996 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6DEt1LYCUM)  shares the same genre of Romance Triller as our opening title sequence. This film has used the standard lay out for title order. The titles are simple and white, However the titles are too big in my opinion. The titles take up too much of the scene which takes the attention away from what's happening in the sequence. In my opening title sequence I want the titles to be smaller and less distracting as I want the audience to be focusing on what's happening in the sequence. The opening sequence for Fear is starts off with landscapes and stays this way for half the sequence. This allows the titles to be big as there isn't much to distract the audience from. The opening title sequence for Fear builds a good atmosphere and mood but doesn't make it clear or give away what the movie will be about.

Saul and Elaine Bass

Saul Bass was an American graphic designer and film maker, and us know for his design of opening title sequences.

Saul Bass had a huge impact in the development of opening title sequences in Hollywood films. He is a key figure and has influenced many film makers and movies. he was born on the 8th of may 1920 and died on the 25th of April 1996. Saul; Bass started his career by working as a graphic designer on advert campaigns. he then started working as set visual consultant where he starting building connections with key figures in the film industry. he worked with some low the biggest film makers such as Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder and Martin Scorsese. Saul Bass wanted to change opening title sequence from the official presentation of legal and copyright information and the presentation of the cast and crew. he saw an opportunity to create titles in a new way and set the story up for the rest of the film.

Elaine Bass was Saul Bass wife who was also an American title designer and film maker. Elaine was born in 1927 and is still alive to the day. Elaine Bass had her own successful career before meeting Sail Bass. She Co-directed and produced "Spartacus" in 1960. When they got married the pair began working to together. They worked together for 40 years and create some of the most successful opening title sequences. As a couple they inspired many individuals.

In 1991 they worked together to produce the opening title sequence for the film Cape Fear.

The opening title sequence for Cape Fear begins with an establishing shot of warm lighted water with ripples in. This could suggest that water is included in rest the movie. The soundtrack is tense orchestral non-diegetic music. Dark low key lighting is used in the opening which sets a dark tone for the rest of the film. Close ups of different facial parts underwater is shown in the opening. This suggests something might have gone wrong like someone drowning, which creates panic. A drop falls downwards on the screen and instantly the lighting changes to red, which has the connotations of blood and danger. As the screen changes to red, the music gets more and more intense. The opening sequence ends on a close up of eyes in black and white, like X-ray vision. This opening sequence creates a creepy atmosphere for the audience, I think this is created by the contrast in music and setting.

First Editing Session

Today was our first editing session :)))))))

Me and my group headed to the editing suite and opened up the file with all footage in. We decided that we wanted to watch all the shots we got before editing. We watched them all and changed the name of each shot we liked and wanted to put in our opening sequence.

We then started dragging the shots over and putting them in order. While doing this we were cutting the shots to exactly where we wanted it to start and end. We decided we wanted to start the opening sequence off slow and not give the whole idea straight away. We started the opening sequence with a mid shot of the girls smiling at each other. we then cut to a mid shot of the mom. dad and girl. After these we added close ups of the girls smiling and the mum holding the rosary.

This is all we got done today but we have 5 more lesson working on editing.  I think for our first editing session, it was successful and we got a understanding of what needs to be done.

Shoot Day

Today (Thursday, 3rd March) was the shoot day for our opening sequence title. I was nervous and excited for the day to begin. We started the day off by meeting Adam and Tom in the media studio at 9. We gathered our props, cast members, camera and studio lights and then headed to Beatrice Webb house. When we arrived we were able to set up quickly and jump straight into filming, due to me building the fort the night before. Me and Bea got the two girls dressed and then added some fairy lights and more pillows to the fort. We spoke to the girls and explained what we wanted them to do. They listen and performed in the way we asked.

We then put the Camera and studio light in place for our first shot, and starting filming. We started off with  a mid shot from the right hand side, and got the girls to laugh and smile facing each other. We then repeated this shot a couple more times however we were zooming in more and more on Saskia face for each shot. We then repeated this on the left hand side and zoomed more into Gracie. While zoomed in on Gracies face we got her to say "I love you" in a sweet tone. We want to use that shot at the end of our opening sequence.

We then moved the camera to a mid shot slightly off centre facing the fort. For these shots we filmed Saskia lying on Gracie while stroking her arm. While the camera was in this position, we got the girls to act out more cute and innocent movements such as tucking each others hair behind an ear and placing their hands on each others faces. We zoomed in and out for most of these shots to give us more variety when it comes to editing. After focusing on their faces, we lowered the camera and zoomed in to focus on the girls hands. We got them to play with each other fingers and hold hands. For one shot we were focusing on Gracies smiley face and then panned down onto the girls hands. As we are not using any dialogue for most of our opening sequence we were able to play music while filming this scene, which made the girls more relaxed and comfortable as well as making the environment fun for everyone.

The filming for the fort shots ran smoothly and quicker than I expected. We had gotten all the shots we needed after an hour and a half. This left us with plenty of spare time. We used the spare time to get creative and add more shots. One of the shots we added were the girls leaning in to kiss each other. I didn't think a kiss would be appropriate to add into our opening sequence as I want to keep it as young innocent love. However I like the idea of the leaning in for a kiss shot next to an emotional exorcism shot. I think that filming this shot was a good idea as it gives us the option to add it. Another shot we added that wasn't planned was the girls lying down on a pillow with their faces next to each other and their hands holding. We put the camera above the girls at a tilt. We made this shot longer than any other shot we filmed. After we filmed both the girls, we zoomed in on just one at a time. We got them to repeat the same movement they did before. This is useful and make the opening sequence better when it comes to editing.
One challenge we faced while filming this scene was ensuring the fort didn't fall down. Originally we used pool cue to help hold up the fort however it started to fall down. We had the idea to stick the pool cue into the couch instead of next to the couch. This gave the fort more support and helped it stay up for the whole scene. Another issue we faced during filming was the lighting. We had originally placed one light in front of the fort however this made the girls look dark and the camera couldn't pick up their features. To fix this we put another studio light at the back of the fort, this made everything lighter and it looked much better on camera. Once we were happy with the shots we had taken and got enough, we went for our lunch break.

At 1 o'clock we headed back to Beatrice Webb to start filming the exorcism scene. Me Bea and Otto went upstairs to the room we were filming in and organised it so it looked good. We moved the bed slightly to make space for Adam and Nicky to stand. We cleared and moved objects surrounding the bed area, to make the setting more homely and less like a boarding school room. We placed a big cross and a chalice onto the shelf to help portray how religious the family is. Once we thought the bedroom looked good, we started setting up the camera and studio light. I spoke to the cast and told them what we needed to do and gave them instructions. I then went and got Saskia dressed into a black dress. Bea made Nick a dog collar out of paper as our original dog collar we were going to use didn't detach from the priest costumes. We gave Nick a small cross necklace, a rosary and a Bible to help him look more like a vicar. We gave Nicky (the mum) a rosary to imply that both the parents are religious. Once we were happy with the set and costumes we started filming. The camera was on a tripod on the right hand side of the room for the majority of the time. The tripod was at a higher level to make the camera seem like a fifth eye in the room. The studio light was placed next to the camera. We only used this light for the whole of filming as it create the mood we wanted in the room.

For the first shot we got Nick to walk into the frame, open his bible and start reciting the lords pray. We asked him to slowly start getting more aggressive with his hand movements as the camera can't see his face and only his back and hands. Our main focus for this shot was the girl and her parents. We asked Saskia to grab her mums hand out of fear, and asked the mum to quickly look away when she did so. After we got this shot a few times, we zoomed in closer to the parents and Saskia so the priest was out of camera. We then focused a few shots on just one person at a time. We did this incase we want to cut between all three of their certain reactions when editing.

After many shots like this we decided to just focus on girl and the vicar, and asked the parents to leave. We wanted to get a POV from the girl looking at the vicar. For this I needed to lie on the bed and place the camera on my legs. We asked nick to give this his all and really go for it. As we are not using dialog nick was screaming the funniest things which made everyone laugh, however he managed to stay in character. Filming this close up of the priest was my favourite part of the day. It allowed me to hand hold the camera which was enjoyable and I think we were able to get the shots had planned.

After we had gotten all the shots of the vicar, Nick left and our last focus of the day was the girl. We moved the camera to where nick had been standing and zoomed in on Saskia sitting on the bed. We wanted a close up of her emotions. We filmed several shots which were all about half a minute each. We had asked Saskia to show emotion and look scared. As Saskia is an incredible actress this was easy for her to do and sold it well.  Once we got a good amount of shot, We called it a wrap.

We faced a few issues while filming the exorcism scene. One of them being the fact the bed didn't have a headboard. We knew that the bed we where using didn't have one so we went and asked the maintenance guy at school, but he didn't have one either. We decided that we would just have to film without one. Not having a headboard did mean we had to change a few of our original shots but we were able to improvise new shots while filming. Another issue we had was when Tom removed one of the memory cards out of the camera and left the room. My group and I thought that we weren't able to film until Tom had returned with a new memory card however we did not know that the camera had two memory cards in it. We all waited around till tom returned (which was about 10 minutes). When he returned he told us that there was another memory card in the camera and that we could have carried on filming. This was inconvenient as we wasted time but it taught us something new that we can learn from in the future. One of the main lessons I learnt whilst filming is things don't always go to plan and that you must always be open to change. Although I wasn’t very stressed for the shoot, I was nervous of things not going to plan or not looking the way I wanted etc, but I realised last minute changes or ideas can be the most successful.
The exorcism scene harder to film and felt more intense compared to the lover in fort scene. I think this was due to the fact that we were working with a bigger cast and the pressure was higher. With the fort scene we were able to experiment, take our time with the shots and have more creative freedom where as the exorcism scene had to be more professional.
Overall the shoot day was amazing and I am extremely happy with how it turned out. The day was almost  exactly how I imagined it would be. I was the camera man through out the whole shoot day. This was really interesting and I learnt new things from Tom. I also enjoyed setting up the set, putting the cast members in place and telling them what to do. I can't wait to watch all the shots and begin editing :)))))

Night Before Shoot

To make life easier, my group and I decided it would be best for us if I prepared and made the fort the night before the shoot. As I board in Beatrice Webb house i was able to make the fort in the location we were filming in. I got many blankets, pillows and other useful objects and began making the fort.

The fort turned out exactly how we had planned and saved us a lot of time on our shoot day.

Day Before Shoot Meeting

Today my group and I had our final meeting before shoot day. Caitlin is unable to be with us tomorrow for our shoot day due to travel issues. Me Bea and Otto made sure everything is in place and ready to go for the shoot. We went to the theatre department to check on our props. We went through costumes to made sure each cast member had what they needed. We then emailed all our cast reminding them what they need to wear/bring and also confirming the times they are needed.I then printed off copies of the shoot day schedule, order of shots for the exorcism and lover scene and the lords pray for Nick to read. I gave this out to my group to help the day run smoothly.

Organising Of Props

For our props we emailed Elizabeth, who works for the theatre department at school. I asked her if my group and I could borrow a priest costumes.

Elizabeth told me I need to contact Alastair Coulton who is in charge of props in the theatre department. I emailed him asking to borrow a Bible, crosses and a Rosary. Alastair was very helpful and was able to lend us the props we needed :))))))))))

For the fort scene we are using a Galaxy light and fairy lights. I already had a galaxy light and I ordered Fairy lights from amazon.

For costumes we are using clothes that we already have.
